COOL WHIP

Cool Whip was invented by a food chemist named William A. Mitchell and introduced in 1967 by the Birds Eye division of General Foods. Birds Eye later merged with Kraft Foods and Cool Whip is now manufactured in Avon, New York.

From 1967 through 2010, Cool Whip was considered “non-dairy” because it did not contain milk, cream or lactose. However, it did contain casein which is a milk derivative.

In 2010, light cream and skimmed milk were added to the original Cool Whip recipe.

This whipped cream-like product is sold in 8 oz. and larger plastic tubs and mainly used as a dessert topping. Some U.S. and Canadian markets also offer Cool Whip in an aerosol can to compete with Reddi-Wip. Typical varieties you will find in your grocery store include Original, Extra Creamy, Light, Reduced Fat, Fat-Free, Sugar-Free (made with Splenda) and Chocolate. Strawberry can sometimes be found seasonally.

Cool Whip is a much cheaper substitute than real whipped cream. It keeps longer in the refrigerator or freezer. It requires no whipping and does not deflate. AND it has fewer calories.

CREAM CHEESE

According to Kraft Foods, the first American cream cheese was made in 1872 in Chester, New York, by a dairyman named William Lawrence. According to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records, Kraft’s Philadelphia Cream Cheese brand was first used commercially in September of 1880. It was sold in tin foil wrappers as it still is today.

It appears that the name “Philadelphia” was adopted because this Pennsylvania city was treasured for high-quality dairy products. Today, cream cheese is manufactured by a variety of generic brand names as well. After all these years, I believe that the Philadelphia brand is still far superior in taste and texture.

Cream cheese is a soft white cheese that is not left to naturally mature as other cheeses. It is made from a combination of milk and heavy cream. Its mild taste was originally used as a spread on various types of bread, crackers and vegetables, and to add a creamy texture to sauces and other foods.

Today, there are many cream cheese varieties to choose from including: original, santa fe’ blend, savory garlic, Italian cheese & herb, whipped cream cheese, brick cream cheese, and so much more!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO AUSTINSTAR

Thank you Austinstar for your hub Texas Best Banana Pudding Recipe. I made your recipe shorty after you posted it, and it was wonderful. I started thinking of all the desserts I make and love - that call for Cool Whip and cream cheese. It was truly my inspiration for this piece.

DID YOU KNOW - SOME PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO:

  • Use Cool Whip instead of shaving cream
  • Shine their shoes with Cool Whip
  • Shine plant leaves with Cool Whip
  • Spread Cool Whip on sunburn to ease the pain
  • Rub Cool Whip into their hair, leave on for 30 minutes, then shampoo
  • Use Cool Whip as cold cream to remove makeup
  • Use Cool Whip as a substitute for creamer in coffee

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS MAGIC COMBO

  • I love desserts made with Cool Whip 'n Cream Cheese
  • Desserts made with Cool Whip 'n Cream Cheese are okay
  • I'm sadly alergic to Cool Whip 'n Cream Cheese
  • I don't eat desserts
  • I never heard of these products

Good Morning Sunnie,

I'm really glad you enjoyed this. I have used Cool Whip in my coffee when I have run out of creamer. It's not bad. But I can honestly say that I have never put it on my face or in my hair :) Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!

Sharyn

thebluestar 9 months ago

Hi Sharyn, beautiful photo and making me so hungry. I is lunch time in Ireland and I will have to try that Pistachio Nut Dessert mmmm mmm. In Ireland the product is called Dream Topping and is just brilliant. Keeps much longer than fresh cream too. Thanks for sharing. x

Sharyn's Slant 9 months ago

Hello Blue,

Interesting, I figured Cool Whip was called something different in other countries. Here, we have something called Dream Whip which is a powder and then whipped with milk. It's really good when mixed with pudding or used instead of heavy, overly sweet cake frosting. But Cool Whip is better to me, especially when mixed with cream cheese. The pistachio nut dessert is really awesome. Thanks for stopping by . . .

Sharyn

Austinstar 9 months ago

Whoa! Absolutely stunning! Voted up and Awesome.

That pictachio nut dessert looks "to die for". I shall make it forthwith.

Ok, here's another combo that very few people use, but it is the bomb - Marshmallow cream + cream cheese. It tastes like cream cheese cake frosting so you can use it on cupcakes, cakes, cookies, in the same desserts as above (eliminate the sugar since marshmallow cream has sugar in it). It's delicious!

Thanks for the link and I'm glad you enjoyed the banana pudding - it's my favorite.

b. Malin 9 months ago

Love it, Love it, Love it! Sharyn, have you ever tasted a "Cream Cheese Omelette" to die for girlfriend! Everything you wrote about sounds delicious. Thanks for sharing. And some People eat Cool Whip off their Lover's body...OH NO NOT ME...Well maybe a few years back!!

Cardisa 9 months ago

I like the Pistacchio nut dessert and the Cat in the bowl...wait that's not a recipe...lol

I love both cream cheese and whip cream so yes, MAGIC!

Sharyn's Slant 9 months ago

Hey Lela,

Thank you again for the "inspiration." And YES, you are so right about cream cheese and marshmallow cream. I've made my FRUIT DIP dozens of times. Seriously, I could just eat it with a spoon. I use 1 8 oz. cream cheese and one 7 oz. jar of marshmallow cream. But my favorite "secret addition" is grated orange rind or orange oil flavoring. And you can add a drop of food coloring depending on your "theme." Everyone loves this. YOU ARE RIGHT! IT IS THE BOMB! I usually serve it with a variety of fruit but my favorite is either bananas or red seedless grapes. Hmmmm, I bet that would be really good on carrot cake too. Crap, now I have to make some dip SOON. Thanks Austin - have a great day!

Hi B,

I have never had a cream cheese omelette. Sounds good, please give us the recipe. And Cool Whip as a toy? That doesn't surprise me :) I best it was fun. I'd like to have a Cool Whip eating contest with a bunch of people sitting around the picnic table outside. Kinda like a watermelon eating contest - but even messier! Thanks for stopping by and for your fun comments.

I know it's kind of "corny" but I really do think that Cool Whip and cream cheese are a MAGIC combo. I can't believe how I am craving any one of these recipes right now. I must get to the store :) And yes, isn't that kitten so adorable? Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Have a wonderful day!

Isn't it funny that the idea of combining these two ingredients seems disgusting but is really out-of-this-world amazing? Voted up and awesome. Great job at presenting the facts and some useful recipes here.

Hyphenbird 9 months ago

Yum Yum. Just when I kick one bad habit along comes another temptation. Oh well, a girl has to have a vice or two. Gotta run to the grocery store now for some.....carrots, yeah, healthy carrots. wink-wink

Sharyn's Slant 9 months ago

Hi Kitty,

I'm so glad you stopped by. Thanks for your sweet comments. I seriously could eat the CW & CC combo just by itself with a spoon. Heck, I'd use a fork too or my fingers :)

Have a great weekend!

Sharyn

Sharyn's Slant 9 months ago

Hello Hyph,

Ya know, you reminded me about years ago when I was trying to "live the Zone diet" (similar to Atkins) and I remember being told only to shop the outskirts of the grocery store - that there is nothing I should eat that is in the aisles. So, we all know you usually find fruits and veggies in the outer aisle BUT I AM THRILLED TO KNOW THAT COOL WHIP AND CREAM CHEESE ARE ALSO FOUND IN THE OUTER AISLE (at least at the places I shop). WHOOOO HOOOO!

I think you should try dipping carrots in CW & CC. Might be good? Enjoy your weekend!

Sharyn

MobyWho 9 months ago

Well, there goes the diet - but thanks Sharyn - this is just the thing to make for rainy days when I equate eating with sunshine!

Sharyn's Slant 9 months ago

Morning Moby,

Ha, that is a great idea. It's kinda cloudy here today and supposed to rain. I like your idea. And I will be grocery shopping today. No doubt I am feeling the need to make something with the magic ingredients. Have a great weekend!

You have now made me very hungry for this magical combination!! :) I do agree that keeping those two things as a kitchen staple is necessary. I just used cream cheese last night as I was making Chicken Cordon Blue... very tasty but probably not a good idea to add Cool Whip to the recipe regardless of how much you like it! :)

Sharyn's Slant 9 months ago

Hey BBG,

Yeah, Cool Whip might curdle in the Cordon Blue, ya know? But you could have just ate it with a spoon for dessert. Hope you are having a "huppy" day!

And I hope to remember to start by taking photos so I can write a hub about it. Thanks so much for your comments and votes!
