The Power of Taking a CAT NAP (with Photo Gallery)
86Punkin will take a catnap anywhere!
DO YOU TAKE CAT NAPS?
Most of us have felt the need for a power nap or “cat nap” at one time or another. These much shorter than normal periods of sleep are meant to increase the benefits of our time versus the sleep deficit we may have accumulated. If we end our catnap prior to falling into a deeper sleep cycle, we will usually be revitalized.
Taking a cat nap can be done anywhere and usually not in bed.
As I thought about my previous statement, I was reminded how my one cat, Punkin, loves to sleep everywhere else except in her beds that I have provided in several places throughout the house.

WHERE DID THE TERM "CAT NAP" ORIGINATE
The phrase cat nap comes from the short sleep cycles cats take all day long. Because cats first began life out in the wild where they had to protect themselves, they have inherited an instinct to remain somewhat alert at all times to sense danger. This has developed their ability to sleep for short periods of time.
An average adult cat sleeps approximately 15 hours per day total. While this time is about double that of humans, cats really only sleep deeply for 10-15 minutes at a time.
Punkin tends to take cat naps anywhere else but her cat beds . . . like the toolbox!
THE POWER NAP
American Social Psychologist and Professor at Cornell University, James Maas, coined the term “Power Nap.” He is known for his extensive research in the field of sleep and its relationship to performance.
Here is James Maas’ direct definition of a Power Nap in the Urban Dictionary: “A revitalizing, re-energizing, refreshing short, but powerful sleep, usually mid-day, which is especially good for those times when one still has lots of work to do, is very tired, and has only 20 minutes in which to get back their productive power.” http://www.urbandictionary.com
In his book, Power Sleep, Maas recommends 15-30 minute only power naps to be sure a person does not fall into a deeper phase of sleep. If there is a desire to sleep longer, he proposes napping at least 90 minutes to complete a full sleep cycle. Taking a nap that lasts in between 30-90 minutes leads to an interruption in the sleep cycle and the possibility of feeling more sleepy and sluggish when you awake.

CAT NAPPING ON THE JOB
Obviously, Punkin knows that taking a cat nap during our work day can be very beneficial.
Every year, more and more businesses are learning the benefits of employees taking a cat nap during the work day. This strategy is thought to assist in maintaining alertness especially in jobs that have a high safety factor.
The idea of taking a cat nap or power nap during the work day is thought to be cutting edge by many. This concept prompted a midtown Manhattan company called YeloSpa to offer power naps (YeloNaps) to help workers rejuvenate during their work day. A 20-minute YeloNap starts at $17 with customized options for relaxation.
When the founder of Yarde Metals in Bristol, CT, built new office space for his manufacturing business in 1995, he also designed a napping room with couches. Although Craig Yarde admits that at first, people thought the idea was “completely nuts,” he is positive that providing a location and opportunity to take a nap has improved productivity. His business continues to grow to include additional facilities along the coast, all with napping rooms of course.
Interestingly, many job seekers today are finding that potential employers are offering the amenity of a nap room as part of their benefits package.

Never know what you will find in the linen closet!
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES & MIDDAY SIESTAS
There are different cultural attitudes regarding napping during the work day. For example, people in Greece commonly break for lunch around 1 p.m. Following lunch, workers take a nap for a couple of hours. After their nap, it’s back to business as usual until 8 p.m. or later.
Many cultures serve their largest meal at midday. Taking what is known as a midday siesta following this meal is common. It is a time for rest before returning to work.
Midday siestas date back hundreds of years in climates such as in Spain where workers would resort to taking a nap during the hottest hours of the day and then continue working when the day cools down. Midday siestas seem to be a disappearing practice, though, with modern conveniences such as air conditioning.

WHY & HOW TO TAKE A CAT NAP
Taking a cat nap is a great way to refresh ourselves. Researchers have found that people who take a nap improve their cognitive function. They are more alert, perform better and are more creative.
BEFORE YOUR NAP: Be sure to go to the bathroom.
LENGTH OF NAP: It is important to be careful how long you actually doze. More than ½ hour can lead to sleep inertia, the lingering sluggish feeling after you awake.
LOCATION OF NAP: Find a quiet, dim-lit location without distractions to help you fall asleep faster. But don’t try to force the sleep. You can feel refreshed from just resting without sleeping.
SETTING THE MOOD FOR YOUR NAP: Get into a comfortable position. Try to relax your mind, close your eyes and breathe gently.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE FALLING ASLEEP: Try listening to music designed especially to induce a sleep state.
WAKING UP FROM YOUR NAP: If you are concerned that you will sleep longer than the suggested 15-30 minutes, set the alarm on your watch or cell phone.
Time for a catnap on top of the warm cable box!
A WORD OF CAUTION
For humans, naps during the day do not provide the same restorative benefits as continuous 6-8 hour periods of sleep. Therefore, brief napping should not be a substitute for regular sleep.
In addition, people with chronic insomnia or depression should consult their physician since napping could aggravate their already disrupted sleep patterns.

Wonderful hub! Absolutely adored the cat photos. My cat, Blue finds the oddest places to sleep too. I tell Bob that she is practicing Cat-Chi! She finds places with a lot of cat-chi and sleeps there for a few days, then I guess the chi moves, because she finds a new place a few days later and sleeps there for a while.
Some cats just know the cat-chi places to sleep! Your two cats look very much like my two cats. Punkin seems to have a whole lot of personality.
Thanks for the link, I think I will reciprocate!
I'm beginning to think, Sharon, that cat napping is much more prevalent than we know. Have you ever talked to someone and felt like that person was really napping at the time ... with their eyes open?
I agree with your thesis - napping is good for you ... as long as you are not driving your vehicle at the time. Voted Up for the good information.
These pictures are adorable! I can't seem to take cat naps or power naps. It takes me a long time to fall asleep. And Amy always goes looking for me if I'm not making any noise. My Amy can sleep anywhere. I have to be ultra comfortable, though...
Before your nap... be sure to go to the bathroom!
Ooohh, you just had to get me to push the 'funny' button along with UP and all the others... on this amazing piece! Punkin is a great model of this modality that I have sweared by for years... excuse me, time for a quick cat nap!
Love, Maria
I love this hub! The pictures of the cats are adorable and shows me that ours are not the only ones that nap in very odd places. As you know, we have six and some days you won't see any of them for hours (secret naps I guess). Other times it looks like a jungle in here.
Sharyn, this was so much fun. I love the pictures of Punkin all over the house and the one of Peanut. The one of Punkin on the computer is a sign that she wants you to pay attention to her and only her. LOL
Your hub is very informational, and I am glad you shared it. I have sleeping disorders and am supposed to have no less than 10 hours of sleep per day... that is never going to happen, but I do try to fill in the gaps by taking a nap each afternoon. If I don't, I fell so exhausted and can barely think or function. With a nap, I feel so much better and am so much more productive in the evenings. I never lie down on the bed for my naps either - recliner all the way! LOL
Thanks for writing and sharing your beautiful cat pictures! Votes and shared!
I just absolutely loved this hub! The pictures of your cats and the dog taking naps are so cute! Voted up, interesting, funny, and useful! Thanks!
So cute, Punkin is my kind of cat she's happy no matter where she drops. I once had our dining room table ready for company, walked in the dinning room and our cat Sam was taking a nap in a plate. Enjoyed your hub.
I know cat napping is good for us but my problem is that whenever I take a cat nap I wake up in the grumpiest of moods.
Cats always look so comfortable while they are sleeping. Almost makes me wish I had fur :) Loved all the pictures!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz huh? Five more minutes..just give me five...please. Go away!zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Great hub! I am about to take my catnap! As your hub suggests, taking a nap is a helpful thing to do! Voted up!
Love the pictures of your babies Sharon! That is so funny! I took a puppy nap today:). That JS the puppy fell asleep while I was petting him and oops I fell asleep too!
The sleep community pushes naps for everyone - and yet we could never convince them that if we believed it was so good and vital - why didn't they let us take naps??? Shouldn't we be the leaders? Hmmm? NO! Was always the answer:) haha
liked your article i always up for a good catnip with my cat as well
check out shuteye4me.com for sleeping tips
Oh Punkin is so, so cute. (She looks a bit like our ginger and white cat.) She certainly chooses some interesting places to sleep!
I’d like to be able to catnap, but I rarely manage it. Hope you enjoyed yours! A fun - and informative hub.
Sharyn, I love this Hub. Your cats are beautiful and the information pertinent for many people. I love a 20 minute catnap but seldom get one. I may need to get a cat so I can curl up with his/her example.
What a brilliant hub;very unique and beautiful.
Thanks for sharing;take care and have a great day.
Eddy.
This is one of the cutest Hubs EVA! Your cat is so funny with sleeping habits. My favorite pic is the cat sleeping on the dog who is sleeping under a blanket in the dog bed hahah
I do take a nap almost every single day - even if it is only a 10 minute power nap between loads of laundry or between volunteer sessions at the school. I sleep like crud at night so I really do need the power cat nap to make it through the day - and that little nap leaves me feeling well rested and ready to accomplish things. I even take a nap at work! I get 30 minutes to eat. I only need 10 then the other 20 are reserved for rest :) Great Hub and thanks for pointing out that cat naps dont = laziness! ((Not to mention some of us may have health issues that require a little more rest than others))
Such darling cat photos--they know much that we could learn from! I've been thinking of taking regular cat naps so this is interesting. While it's true that we can't depend on them to help us get by without regular sleep, we can depend on them to help us function better during the day. Thanks for a practical look at cat-napping!
Good subject for a hub, Sharyn and so clever of you to illustrate it with the very people who specialise in napping!
I am a proud mommy of a new kitty cat. When my daughter came home over the holiday break she adopted a kitten that her friend had found. They tried to locate the owner and she decided she was going to keep it. Next thing I know, she left to college and we gained a new companion. Mind you - I am allergic to cats! Strangely, I do not seem to be allergic to this particular cat. We named her Pip and she is affectionately known as Pippy and/or Pippa. Our outdoor dog, Ollie is not too happy about our new housecat. LOL They have very interesting stare down contests through the patio doors. :)
Cats are certainly fun to observe. As for the naps. I could sure use a catnap every now and then. I still have not found a good schedule since I started HP. Maybe I should curl up with Pip for a quick nap when I get home from work. :)
Great hub - cute pictures!
Aaw I didn't realize Buttons wasn't with us anymore. Bless the sweet things tiny soul.
interesting, sharon. very helpful. I love what me and my brothers call "football comas" where you sleep in front of a football game and wake up every few minutes and catch a play of two. I love naps, but this Hub is making me sneeze so I should leave...
While some were alleging that wine explained France's lower incidence of heart disease and its relatives, the real fountain of youth was the afternoon siesta of 30-60 minutes. My info showed that a siesta over 60 minutes had little to no added impact on heart disease. A 2012 BYU study (probably on the Internet) also suggests that too much sleep is a negative when it comes to learning and retention.
GREAT kitty photos! That is a beautiful pair of cats you have there!
I'm one of those who has trouble 'clearing my mind,' and suffer from insomnia at times, so I don't nap on purpose, because it takes me far too long to drift off. However, I find that I often accidentally fall asleep on the couch after dinner! I'm sure that doesn't help the insomnia...but, oh, well...we're retired, so if I don't sleep well at night, I can always sleep later in the morning.
Very well-done hub, and interesting to note the changes happening in the workplace as well! Voted up, interesting, useful and shared.
We fit in a siesta a few times a week. Of course, it helps that we live in Latin America. While living in the U.S. we found it practically impossible to manage. Thank you for an interesting hub and the adorable photos of Punkin!
My cats sleep in the weirdest of places. But since two of my children have left home they have their own bedrooms.Voted up and bizarre. Sorry, I mean interesting.
Great photos.
Awsome hub. Your Punkin is so cute and really finds odd places to take cat nap. And, you have captured it really good in perfect time. Voted up! Well it is my cat nap time.
Wonderful hub. I take cat nap frequently. I believe in cat naps. However, like you said, if you sleep beyond 30 minutes you will fall into deep sleep. Very nice pics. Great hub. Voted up and useful.
I'm all for taking catnaps - like any other self respecting feline! :D
Seriously, I work from home and I find that my productivity dips after lunch...so a short nap before getting back to work is really rejuvenating!
Love the pictures in this hub! :)
This is an awesome hub and I love the way you illustrated it with photos of Punkin who seems to be the cat nap expert and made a very cute cat nap model.
I love napping but need the longer variety- if I fall asleep mid-day I go into a sound sleep for around 90 to 120 minutes and then I wake up feeling totally rejuvenated. I then stay up late but still make sure I get a full 6 or 7 hours of sleep.
Loved this hub and from the number of comments you've gotten it looks like it's a big hit with many who read it!
Voted up across the board.
I'm a great believer in catnaps - like any other self respecting feline! :)
I love cat naps and your pictures. I posted this hub as one of my favorites for the week of March 18. Cheers.
Hi Sharyn, what a fabulous hub and the photos of punkin and peanut are adorable!
Catnaps are such a great idea, but I just can't seem to do it!
Voting up, best wishes Lesley
Awesome hub! Voted all the best possible I could. Enjoyed the pictures too. Thank you!
Such cute pictures!
Wonderful to see that my uncle's belief in catnapping has science behind it. He educated me on the value of catnapping decades ago, saying that all you need are 10 or 15 minutes to get yourself back on track. He was an electrician working for a public service company. He found ways to get that nap in the back of company trucks, long before companies understood the benefits. Lucky for him, in those days, he had a reputation as a stellar employee. He was never caught "sleeping on the job", only restoring his energy.
Your photos are outstanding! If I could fit in a linen closet for a short nap, I would. For now, I try to do it sitting up, with some kind of grace. :) Voted up, interesting, useful.
Sharyn's Slant, this is an awesome hub here about cat naps. When I was in the Military, boy did I have my share of cat naps lol.
I use to always get rudely woken up by many of my co-workers looking to help me out, from getting in trouble with the supervisor's there.
This was a cool experience I had though years back in the US Navy, and I just remembered it after reading your cool hub here, and the part about how some companies are actually making way for napping in the work place.
Wow is all I can say, because for so many years I had thought that would be a great idea, but never had the guts or proof to prove my thoughts on it all.
Like I said on FB, I'm still jealous of you, because your Cats look so cute, and I don't have one lol. You making me want to go get a cute cat now, but I doubt they would learn to nap as your cat has here. Nicely done!
Voted up and out, getting pinned and all.
"Punkin- dooopa..."?? Had to stop by again for a smile!
Voted UP & FAB...Have a great weekend! Love, Maria
Since many years my mother has been raising cats. I love these cute little animals.
Your pictures are awesome.
Very interesting hub. I loved it, you just never know where you will find them napping. Lucky cats.

Thank you Sharyn! Now if I can just get people not to talk to me when I sit in my car after my dinner I'll be alright - smile. You've done two things with this wonderfully informative hub. First, keep on taking those naps at work after eating and 2) I'm getting closer to getting a cat. Great pics bringing a big smile to me.
