MAKE MONEY WRITING GREETING CARDS FROM HOME: Ideas, Markets & Submission Guidelines

Make Money From Home Writing Greeting Cards
If you enjoy writing, what about checking out the greeting card market? Having your work published on a greeting card is a huge delight! It can be quite rewarding and does not require an extensive amount of time.
Writing greeting cards is different from other types of freelance opportunities. You don’t have to spend hours researching a topic. Nor do you have to have to worry about such things as SEO (search engine optimization) or finding the perfect keywords. You simply need to be able to write short, catchy text that is marketable and memorable. So what’s next . . .
Go Shopping
Every greeting card company has its own unique mission. Go shopping and spend time at different kinds of places that sell greeting cards: book stores, grocery stores, specialty shops, museums, florists, pet shops, etc . . . wherever you can get your hands on greeting cards. View a large variety. Be sure to turn the card over to check out the different publishers.
What's Your Style?
Think about which voice suits you best? What is your style? Are you a person who would be good at writing inspiring types of messages? Are you great at writing about love and happiness? Do you have a sarcastic side? Do you enjoy making people laugh? Would you like to write humorous messages with a twist? One liners? Or maybe you would be great at writing sincere cards expressing sympathy and such? Or cards specifically for birthdays or holiday occasions? Think about your ideas also being printed on items such as magnets and bumper stickers. Get a feel for what interests you most and take notes.
Generating Ideas
Ideas are EVERYWHERE! Greeting cards are a way to communicate. Listen to verbal and non-verbal communications around you. You may get an idea when you go for a walk in your neighborhood. Or maybe when you are sitting at a doctor’s office reading a magazine. What feelings and thoughts come up when you are around loved ones? Did something funny happen today that could be turned into an idea? Did you give someone a compliment today? Put your feelings into words for a greeting card.
Brainstorm! Let your mind wander. And write, write, write your ideas down!
Important Books All Writers Should Keep On Hand
Simply browsing through these books, not necessarily for their intended purpose, can generate a flood of new ideas!
1) a dictionary
2) a thesaurus
3) a rhyming dictionary

Acceptance and Rejection
If your ideas are accepted, this is certainly time to be proud and celebrate!
If your ideas are rejected, do NOT give up. Do NOT take it personally as there are many reasons a submission may be rejected.
Of course, rejection doesn’t feel good. But it is part of the wonderful business of writing.
Best wishes!

What a great idea! sometimes when the mood strikes me and it is someone that I know about to have a birthday I will write a poem for that individual. But will check out these links....Thanks so much!
I have never thought of doing this but - you are totally inspiring me with useful info (just the way i like to be inspired!) I am bookmarking your Hub, too :)
Thanks for listing all of these! I have submitted to Recycled Greetings (American Greetings) for over a year now and yes, they are tough wanting both art and works. I will certainly check into the others. Thanks for passing this on:)
Sharyn, what a nice collection of information! This is a great idea...it seems like greeting cards are one print medium that might not go by the wayside, even with all the e-card services out there!
Wow! So much useful information. Thank you.
Thanks for some great ideas and useful information. I enjoy reading dictionaries for fun. You're right, a dictionary could provide good writing ideas!
Thank you Sharyn's Slant. By the way, enjoyed your profile page. Very humerous. I am not so sure I am excited as I am still waiting to see if it is a legitatmate offer. We shall see.... Soooo good to meet you too and thanks for following:)
Yea, don't be in a rush! How I feel, how I see myself and what I really look like make an interesting picture. As complicated and deep as the writing many of us do, how silly is it to think that it would be easy to take a good profile pic! Thanks for the note:)
VOTED UP! Great hub and I'm inspired to check out the possibilities. Thank you!!
A friend of mine is submitting to the greeting card companies. I don't think I have what it takes. My writing tends tobe out there... But I may submit some of my artwork. Thanks for the inspiration.
Ok now I wanna go make some greeting cards. Excellent hub Sharyn! I really have always wanted to make them by hand. I love sending cards/postcards to friends.
Wow Sharyn, I am impressed! What a hub! Very well done, SE friendly and quite a lot of information! I always thought about a card making business because of the prices they charge for those adorable cards that seem like they would be easier to make. Rated up!
I know someone who makes them beautifully - incredible detail! While I admired them, I was working full time so I had to rely on Hallmark:) I've got extra time these days though so I'm glad you reminded me. I'm gonna make some with dirty words in them:) lol!
Haha! Awesome idea Sharyn! That's why I just love you!
New Career Path!!!! Seriously, this is one of the best ideas I've seen in a while. I want to write children's books one day, and this would be a great way to spark my inspirational thinking. Thanks!!
Sharyn~~ This is a fabulous resource and I will keep in my "reference library"... I love making cards at this point for pleasure/ scrapbooking type for friends... such a lost art to send a handwritten note of appreciation and love... for a special day!
Voted UP, USEFUL & AWESOME...!
Thank you!
This is such an interesting hub! It is literally packed FULL of information! I bet everyone who read this is now thinking of something clever or cute that they could put on a greeting card. I know I am!
Sharyn,
This was great! Since I am retiring I may have to check this out for alittle extra cash..that would be so neat. I had thought of this way back but never knew where to start..so thank you for a great hub.
Sunnie

Thanks Sharyn,
I hope YOU are enjoying your weekend too! (:
Diana
Sounds like a great idea for a business.
Thanks for the great info. I am wondering how you found out about all this. Thanks for sharing.
Sharyn, I find this fascinating. When I was young, my Mom and I (who both enjoyed writing) speculated about writing for greeting cards, but never took it any further than that. You actually did the research! This is something I might try.
Thank you so much for a very informative, engaging article. Great job!
Sorry for the double comment ... my computer got stuck. Take care! btw, I am stumbling this ... love it!
Fantastic collection of information. Thanks for sharing.
very informative!
Really awesome Hub - I'm following you - thanks for providing so much info! Love the pop of humor - it makes the article that much more engaging. Cant wait to read your other articles
Awesome hub!! I had so many ideas written down in notebooks, I had actually considered making my own greeting cards...this could be a lot simpler! I checked out the links and they sound pretty simple...thanks again! :)
Good idea about greeting cards. However I am not gived with words or art. Does anyone know of a organization or groups that need people to send out cards to people that are home bound? I would like to be a sender of cards to people. If anyone has any ideas of organizations that need help in that way email me at prettywheels@webtv.net
Denise

I had no idea these opportunities were out there. I am excited to give greeting cards a try.
Thanks for these great resources. I may just try this.

I am so excited! I have 3 lines of greeting cards, my favorite hobby I admit. This hub has given me lots of great information and excited with new ideas!
Thank you indeed

Good hub. Keep it up.
Very good hub. Voted up and useful! Well written and informative. Wonder if a man could do this...
I enjoy reading greeting cards just for a good laugh! I'm not a fan of the mushy ones....I feel those words should be written by the sender of the card. Just my opinion. VERY informative hub! Enjoyed the details and info!! Thanks! Voted UP!
This is great advice. I'm going to have to get on this. Thank you for the useful information.
Thanks for writing this--it inspires me to try again. I've only submitted a few things three times and my stuff wasn't accepted. I think I kind of gave up too easily. I'll give it another try! :-)
Sharyn, this hub is SO helpful! I've been giving this very idea a great deal of thought lately, and haven't put a lot of effort into how to get started. Now, I find out that you've done it for me!
GREAT hub! Thanks for sharing. :)
This is a really great idea! Thank you.
Will do! And, thanks again!
This is another great idea and so useful, i mean this is something even students can work on...if artistic enough they may be accepted too. Thumbs up!
Wonderful suggestions. I always wanted to start my own quirky line of cards just for fun. You can't find these things any where.. for example.. Wow, you really messed up.. something with a sense of humor. You have inspired me to research further. :) Great hub!
Wow, this is great! I always wondered how to break into this market Sharyn! Thanks for sharing on FB! Bookmarking for further research!
JSMatthew~
With all the hubbers who can create poetry, this is an excellent resource for making money. Voting this Up and Useful.
even if i wont get published to a greeting card, i will make it a habit to make beautiful "card like" messages. this is very inspiring. my day today is full of inspirations. i can't contain it.
Hi Sharyn, I write for Oatmeal Studios, but have not submitted anything in a while. They bought a post-it note idea from me. Great Hub.
Sharyn....This is a really great suggestion. about 30+ years ago I sent a greeting card sentiment in to "Blue Mountain Arts." I love their cards. I still remember how crushed I was when I received a letter from them that "although your work is blah blah blah..(all sorts of compliments) it does not conform to our current needs/market...blah blah blah"....they sent me a list of their directives and encouraged me to send in more work. They were really nice. But that was back when I was young and sensitive and got all huffy when rejected. SO I SHOWED THEM, DAMN IT, I NEVER SENT THEM ANYMORE!! And believe it or not, they didn't go out of business...that really ticked me off!
Have you ever considered sending in stories or articles to the many magazines that accept free-lance work? I keep thinking of doing that...but haven't acted on it yet.
Just for your own personal use, isn't there a program for computers that print cards? I'm not in the techno loop...but you can design your own card AND add your own message. That makes it really personal, which is nice.
I'm just thinking that if you could do that, and then take your proto-type to be mass-reproduced...and then distributed. There's alot to it, but say you got $300.00 from Blue Mt. or another company...that's ALL you get..they make the money from selling thousands of cards, right? So, what if you could make all the money? You've already got the perfect name for your Greeting card business: "Sharyn's Slant"....Go for it girl! and Oh, yeah....if you do this? I get 20% of your first million for encouragement! Maybe an all-expense paid vacation to the destination of my choice...and a villa in............Effer!! Geez....too bad no one commented...I must have gone down 44 floors to get here!!
Sharyn,
This is so helpful. You really are such a great help to all of us! Thanks for sharing!
wow, lots of resources here. Thanks a lot. Voted up
Thanks Sharyn, you've sparked me to submit some more ideas to Oatmeal Studios by you writing this Hub. I encourage others to take the plunge and write for greeting card companies because they really do pay.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm just beginning a writer's career so I'm open to all options. I find in my writing & with my children, I break-out in rhyme ... most any time (haha) Thanks.
Wonderful ideas...I have tons of photo but not great thought to go with them most of the time. I use Zazzle for most ideas like that.
sharon, thank thank you thank you. I'll be checkin out all these sites!
Wow Sharyn! This hub was like a spark fo me. I have been wanting to write greeting cards for so long, but just haven't really dug in. I genuinely enjoy writing poems and have become the family go to person for special occasion poetry. Your coverage is awesome. Thanks for the inspiration.
Good information. Thank you for sharing.
Sharyn, I've often been told I could/should write greeting cards - I suppose this is my chance to see if I am really cut out for it. I didnt realize it miiiight be so easy! I am voting and sharing this :) Thanks for putting together the research and info.
I needed this hub, Sharyn! I love it! I actually submitted a few poems to Blue Mtn Arts and Country Living about 20 years ago...LOL. I would love to do greeting cares. I can be really sappy, or really sarcastic, so maybe there are a couple of places I can try. I'm going to print off your hub to remind myself to start looking into that. Thanks for writing this hub for me! Voted up and everything else! I think it's cool, too, that your poll shows that people still like to send greeting cards!
This sounds too good to be true.. I have read this particular hub more than 5 times today!.. Very enlighten.. Is it really that simple.. Or there is more...
By the way, thanks for sharing!
I've thought about writing greeting cards before. This is one of the most useful hubs I've seen so far on HP. Thanks for sharing this! Bookmarking and voting up :)
Great information!! Voted up, away and bookmarked. This hub is sooo valuable and I appreciate the links you provided. YES!! Sharon - you are a hubbing gem. (HUGS)
Wow, what a great idea! I used to make my own greeting cards and always wondered how to sell them, thanks for the info.
Thanks, it is really helpful. I am a new to all these and never considered making money from writing greeting cards. Thanks for the wake up call.
Sharyn, you have opened up so many opportunities for us by writing this hub. I have thought about writing pithy sayings for greeting cards, and you have given great resources. Just paying attention to what is being said on a daily basis is great advice. Thanks for sharing this information!
Votes and Shares!
Thanks for the info and the links. I have considered it many times but have never followed through.
I too have considered writing for greeting cards, and would like to send in some photography to go with it. I never have followed through with it. Now that I have more information, I may do just that! Thank you so much for this very useful information! Voted up and useful! Have a great day! :)
What a fulsome, inspirational Hub! I really like the idea of writing Greeting Cards, and as you say, just the mere fact that it's not important (yet...? God forbid,)to optimise verse for SEO, makes it appealing. Best have a go, methinks.
PS: Loved the Steve Martin clip. I use that expression so much I write it as an acronym. (WGAS). Actually managed to get away with it as a running theme in a Hub I posted about how to cut the cost of living (gives you an idea of the tone..). Then again, maybe it's only still up because the moderators weren't paying attention. But hey, WGAS?
Thanks again for all your helpful hints on becoming a Greeting Card writer.
This is a cool hub! I always wanted to this.
Hi Sharyn,
